Honesty Over Coffee

“You know, it wouldn’t hurt me so much if you had gone somewhere far
like California because you had a really good opportunity.”

“What difference does it make?”

“You left my house to live 10 minutes away. Do you know how that looks?”

“But you know it had nothing to do with you…and how it looks to who?”

“Others. I look like I couldn’t control my daughter…Like I’m a bad Father.”

“Do you believe that you’ve raised me well?”

“Yes.”

“Do you trust me?”

“Of course. If I didn’t, we wouldn’t be sitting here.”

“And didn’t you raise me to not care about what others think as long as I know
myself?”

*Silence*

“Dad.”

“But it was selfish of you to go. The burden is on your brother and me now.”

“Fine, it was selfish but I was losing myself. My drive to keep going and finish my
education.”

“You should’ve learned to adapt.”

“I did the best I could. I left when I had to.”

“Still selfish.”

“I own up to that. It was selfish but it’s unfair of you to ask me to put my life on
hold.”

“What about our lives?”

“That’s for you to decide and handle. I didn’t abandon you. I’m still right here.”

“When you don’t answer your phone, she takes it out on us.”

“What good would it be if I lived there? It wouldn’t change.”

“But…”

“Dad. You know I love you but asking me to come home every time we talk on the phone
makes me not want to call you.”

“You know I’m going to keep doing that.”

“You know I’m not going to break down.”

“I’m stubborn.”

“I’m your daughter. So am I.”

“But you’ll call?”

“I’ll call.”
